Requirements for Hosting E-Labels

E-Labels allow you to present the full nutrition table and ingredient list digitally via a QR code printed on your back label.

The content in this article is not legal advice. Please consult a lawyer or regulator for clarity.

Whether they are hosted on your website or a third-party platform, such as Bottlebooks, all E-Labels must meet the following conditions:

  • Translated. All E-Labels must be available in the official translations of any EU country where the wine might be sold.
  • Lasting. All E-Labels must be available for as long as the wine is expected to remain fit for consumption under normal storage.
  • No user data may be collected. That means no tools such as Google Analytics. Only location is allowed to be collected in order to deliver the appropriate language.
  • No sales content. No marketing or selling of your wines is allowed on the page.
  • No downloads. There should be no PDFs or downloadable files.
  • No navigation. All required information must be accessible without further clicking by the user.

Hosting the E-Label On Your Website

You are allowed to do it, as long as all of the above conditions are met. However, for most producers, this approach will be unrealistic and more costly, as it will require setting up a separate website infrastructure from your marketing website and online store.

For this reason, many producers choose to work with a third-party solution, such as Bottlebooks, which is designed specifically to support legal compliance.
