How to Design and Print QR Codes

When creating QR codes for back labels, following these best practices is crucial to ensure they scan correctly and comply with E-Label regulations.

Use the correct size.
Bottlebooks QR codes are optimized for smaller print by shortening the URL.
However, the minimum recommended size recommended by ISO/IEC 15415, specially when using the GS1 Digital Link, is 11.49 mm x 11.49 mm. A smaller size might make the QR code difficult to scan accurately.  If your QR includes an icon, non-black/white colours, or a long URL, consider increasing the size.

Add a margin.
Make sure there is a clear margin - quiet zone - around the QR code of the same color as the background with no other elements inside it.
A quiet zone of 3.17 mm is recommended for a total of 14.66mm x 14.66mm.

Avoid using symbols.
Icons, such as an “i”, placed in the QR code, may reduce its scanability.
Additionally, the "i" symbol has no regulatory significance for E-labels in the EU and every QR for this purpose needs to have the word "ingredients" (translated, if needed) next to it.

Avoid busy backgrounds.
Do not place the QR code over patterns or images, as this can make it more difficult to scan accurately.
Use a margin to avoid this issue.

Be careful with placement.
Place the informational QR code next to the mandatory information on the back label and not next to another QR code.
This is particularly important if you have multiple QR codes.

Use high-quality printing.
Ensure that the printer you use has a high resolution and can print crisp, clean lines to avoid errors when scanning the QR code.
Poor-quality printing may distort the code or reduce its durability over time due to fading or discoloration.

Test, test, test and test again before printing.
Before printing a large number of QR codes, test the code thoroughly to ensure it can be scanned accurately and that it is the correct QR code.
Test the QR on Android and Apple devices.
Use both newer and older phones.
Confirm the QR links correctly and scans easily.

Troubleshooting

Why your QR code might not be working.

If your QR code isn’t working properly, consider these common causes:
Incorrect link: Did you create the QR outside Bottlebooks? Double-check the URL.
Deleted in Bottlebooks: Contact support to restore your QR code.
No active subscription: Reactivate your subscription and reach out to support.
Poor contrast: Redesign your label with stronger contrast.
Busy background: Add a margin and simplify the background.
Too small: Ensure your code is at least 1.25 cm².
Low print quality: Consult your printer for sharper output.
Reflective or distorted material: The material might be interfering with scanning.
Not tested: Always implement testing before mass printing.
